HANGAR 8

Hangar 8 is an anomaly video game with horror elements on a space station. You wake up gasping for air, but your lungs burn as you cough up PFC fluid. Disoriented and alone, you find yourself trapped aboard a derelict space station. But you’re not truly alone—anomalous activity has consumed the station! Your only chance for survival lies in getting to HANGAR 8 and escaping this looping nightmare before it’s too late!

THE SPACE STATION

The space station consists of several corridors connected by lengthy hallways. Your journey begins in a room that appears to act as a cryo and storage chamber. Once you make your way out, you never return to this room.

A short walk ahead and discover Hangar 8. You are not able to open the door. A nearby datapad contains information on how to open the door. You must successfully loop through the space station and determine whether or not an anomaly exists. If you are successful 8 times in a row, you gain access to Hangar 8. If not, you may need to start over.

The loop is a section of the space station and spans along a protracted hallway. Traveling the hallway can be somewhat tedious but your avatar runs fast so it is not all that bad—several rooms branch off the hallway. You’ll discover a mysterious door, hydroponics, a science lab, and crew quarters.

AESTHETICS

Hangar 8’s art direction is fantastic. The models are built with polygons and are slightly cartoonish. Character models and objects are reminiscent of Lego’s. The art direction is a breath of fresh air for anomaly video games and it works.

There is a retro vibe that goes hand in hand with the art direction. The 1970s or 1980s come to mind. The retro vibe and space station combination might make you think of the movie Alien. Some moments scream, “There is a xenomorph behind me. I’m screwed!” There might now be a xenomorph but there could be something else.

HORROR

The fact that you are alone on a derelict space station should be enough to scare anyone. What would you do? Add in the fact that something is wrong with this space station, and others have tried to escape but are nowhere to be found. So you are probably alone. How do you save yourself? What more do you need?

If you need more, there is plenty to go along with this horrifying situation. There are some terrifying anomalies to discover. Some of them can sneak up on you while others are in front of you but you know something terrible will happen. Both types of anomalies are fun to find and frightening to resolve.

AS I SEE IT

Hangar 8 is a fun game. I felt a lot of influence from the movie Alien, so whether that is the case, I went through the game with an Alien influence in mind. There is one anomaly that nearly made me jump out of my seat. I thought a xenomorph was chasing me, but the anomaly turned out to be something else.

The layout of the space station requires running back and forth. After a few loops, I got used to this and it didn’t bother me. I have a feeling that some gamers will see this as a deterrent. However, the minor inconvenience is worth the effort. There are plenty of fun and scary anomalies to uncover.

MEET THE DEVELOPER

This is Twin Tail Digital’s first video game. They are an indie dev and I am amazed at what one dev can create. I’ve always wanted to make a video game but I don’t even know where to start and I’m too busy with web dev stuff to learn more coding languages. That said, I’m impressed.

You can read about Twin Tail Digital’s experience as an indie video game dev on Hangar 8 Dev Dialogs Direct, our series that connects you with game devs.
