Holiday Horror Video Games
The holidays are a time for gathering, tradition, celebration, cheer, compassion, and holiday horror video games. Celebrate Christmas with your demented ex-girlfriend who won’t let you leave and wants to kill you. Go shopping for Thanksgiving supplies while hunted by a turkey humanoid who also wants to kill you.
It’s beginning to look a lot like the holidays are nightmarish. Thank goodness there are plenty of holiday horror video games to choose from. Let’s take a look at some of the games we have played.

CRIMSON SNOW
It’s Christmas time and this year is extra special. Your girlfriend Joyce wants you to celebrate with her. This is great because your gift to her this year is an engagement ring. What joy! I hope she says yes. The first thing to do is get to her house. You’ll need to walk through a blizzard to get there but lucky for you, she lives right down the street. Sweet!
Uh-oh, the storm picks up quite a bit on your way over and you end up in a mysterious house. Even worse, your ex-girlfriend is there waiting for you and she seems to be possessed by a demon. Shit! Time to get out of here but she won’t let me so now I’ve got to figure out how to leave. Thank goodness I can still talk to Joyce on my phone and she can help me escape. This is great. Now, let’s get the hell out of here.
This is the premise of Crimson Snow. Avoid your ex-girlfriend as you try to escape the house. There are several dialog choices and approaches to exiting the house that affect the end of the game. Solve puzzles, uncover mysteries, and sneak around the house to escape.
GRATIARUM
Happy Turkey Day!! It’s Thanksgiving and you’ve had a fallen out with your family. To hell with your feelings. We need dinner supplies and despite how much we hate you, you need to go to the store now. Here is a list of everything we need and you will not come back until you have found everything we need. Any questions? Good. Now get the hell out of here.
Damn, my family sucks but I guess I’ll do this anyway. Nobody is here and this place looks scary but there are plenty of supplies. Let’s get to work.
Now you have a general idea of what Gratiarum is about. There is a freakish turkey that you must avoid while picking up supplies in the oddly large grocery store. The creep factor is decent and the sound design is amazing. A simple concept that doesn’t push any boundaries in holiday horror video games but it’s a short and fun horror experience worth at least one visit.
VOID HOME
I just love delivering all these toys to children on Christmas. Time to shimmy down this chimney and make another delivery. There we go. What a lovely home. The Christmas tree will look better with presents underneath it. I’ll leave some right here. There are more trees in this home that need presents. This family sure does love Christmas. Let’s go put presents underneath them as well.
Oh no. How did I end up in this strange and unusual place? Where am I? How can this place even exist? I need to get out of here. Bags with talking heads in them? How cruel. This place is evil. A Christmas tree. That has to be my ticket out.
Void Home is surreal. You play as Santa Clause and all he wants to do is deliver presents. However, something is very wrong with this home and shit hits the fan. Your agenda is to escape before it is too late.

AS I SEE IT
Holiday horror video games started to pop into my suggested games feed recently. I don’t remember getting holiday-themed suggestions before but I’m on board. I know holiday-themed horror games are nothing new and there are plenty of them to play but I never really got into them. The idea of taking a traditionally joyful event and using the lore associated with it is neat.
I’m late to the party, I know. I’ll end up changing how I see it in time but for now, this is where I’m at. I’m going to play some more and see what I think. As of now, holiday horror video games are on my radar and I plan to see what else is out there. In the meantime, feel free to recommend some by using the form below. The holiday horror video games that take elements from psychological horror games seem to be my jam but I’ll appreciate any with elements from anomaly video games.
